Hidenori Tsumori (Japanese, b. 1962) is a contemporary ceramic artist known for his sculptural explorations of form, texture, and materiality. Rooted in traditional Japanese pottery techniques yet distinctly modern in execution, Tsumori’s works embody a dialogue between the organic and the architectural, the structured and the spontaneous.
A graduate of Osaka University of Arts, Tsumori trained in ceramics under the guidance of prominent masters before forging his own path as an independent artist. Tsumori has exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally, gaining recognition for his ability to push the boundaries of clay as a sculptural medium. His works have been presented at prestigious institutions and galleries, including the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art and the International Ceramic Art Exhibition in Korea.
His practice is deeply influenced by natural elements—earth, fire, and air—manifesting in surfaces that appear weathered and timeworn, as if shaped by nature itself. Often working with hand-built and wheel-thrown techniques, he employs experimental firing methods to achieve his signature rough, tactile finishes, with surfaces marked by deep fissures, scorched edges, and mineral deposits that evoke a sense of geological time. Tsumori’s sculptures invite contemplation of imperfection, transience, and the beauty found in erosion and decay—concepts deeply tied to the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi-sabi. His work continues to bridge tradition and experimentation, reinforcing ceramics as a medium for profound artistic expression.
