Hong Ling (Chinese, b. 1955) studied in the Art Department of Beijing Normal University, graduating in 1979, then advanced his training at the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), completing graduate studies in 1987. He has since served as an associate professor at CAFA and is a member of the China Artists Association. He lives and works between Beijing and Anhui. Since 2017, his work Four Seasons has been part of the permanent collection of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts.

Hong Ling is celebrated for his innovative combination of Eastern ink-painting sensibilities with Western Abstract Expressionism. His landscapes often manipulate perspective or fragment natural elements, infusing traditional motifs with abstract splashes of paint and linear textures. Critics note that his work sustains the scholar-painter ethos, rooted reverence for nature and historical tradition, while expanding its expressive potential in contemporary oil painting.

Hong Ling is an artist that specializes in painting Huang Shan, having moved there to fully immerse himself in its environment. This painting feels peaceful to me, as it depicts the wintry conditions with a cottage beside a pond.

Acquired from Cape of Good Hope Gallery.
