Hsu Wei-ying (Taiwanese, b. 1980) holds a PhD in Art Creation and Theory from the National Taiwan Normal University, a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the Taipei National University of the Arts, and a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from the National Taichung Teachers College. Hsu has a distinct visual language that merges her expertise in screen printing with the meticulous detail of Gongbi painting and the eastern Gouache techniques introduced to Taiwan during Japanese rule. Her work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Taiwan, Mainland China, Korea, and Spain. She has received multiple awards and is part of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts’ collection.
In her "Nest Lady" series, delicate female figures wear bird nests on their heads, gracefully blending into their surroundings and landscapes. These works radiate a serene and tranquil atmosphere, embodying both a sense of embrace and a detachment from their environment. To the artist, the bird nest symbolizes home—a place of belonging yet also an intangible responsibility. These women carrying their homes reflect the artist's inner gentleness and resilience, merging reality and fantasy into a poetic and ambiguous space.
