I Ketut Soki (Indonesian, 1946-2022) was a Balinese painter and a foundational figure in the “Young Artists” movement of the 1960s. Born in Penestanan, Bali, he began his artistic journey under the mentorship of Dutch artist Arie Smit, who discovered Soki and his cousin I Nyoman Cakra drawing in the sand and invited them to his studio for formal lessons. This initiative led to the emergence of a vibrant, colourful style depicting everyday Balinese life, characterized by flat perspectives and bold outlines. Soki’s works have been exhibited internationally, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Singapore.

This piece is one of the last few works, or possibly the last one, completed before Pak Soki’s death around August 2022. The Certificate of Authenticity, signed by the artist, is dated 15 January 2022. The work was acquired directly from the artist’s family via their family-owned gallery, and was delivered to the current owner by the artist’s two sons. The delivery was documented with photographs, available upon request.
