I Made Djirna (Indonesian, b.1957) is a Balinese contemporary artist born in Kedewatan, Ubud. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in 1985. Growing up surrounded by Balinese myths, spirits, dance and shadow puppetry, Djirna developed an early interest in drawing and painting. His multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, sculpture and installation, and often incorporates diverse materials, techniques and textures.
Djirna’s work explores social and political issues, human relationships, spirituality and reflections on village life, while remaining deeply connected to Balinese culture and traditions. His paintings often move between figuration, abstraction and visual deconstruction, using expressive lines, colours and layered materials to convey personal and emotional experiences. He has exhibited extensively in Indonesia and internationally, including in Australia, Canada, Guam, Singapore and Switzerland, with works held in public and private collections across Asia, Australia and Europe
