I Made Wianta (Indonesian, 1949–2020) was a leading Indonesian contemporary artist whose practice spanned painting, drawing, performance, and installation. Trained in Bali, Yogyakarta, and later in Brussels, his work reflected a synthesis of Balinese cultural traditions with global modernism. Wianta explored themes of time, language, and social change, often blending abstraction with symbolic motifs drawn from Balinese heritage. Widely exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale in 2003, he is recognised as one of Indonesia’s most significant modern artists.
