I Wayan Sujana Suklu (Indonesian, b. 1967) is a renowned contemporary artist and educator. A graduate and later doctoral scholar of the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar, Suklu is known for merging traditional Balinese concepts like sekala (tangible) and niskala (intangible) with modern art practices, guiding his exploration of the interplay between the physical and metaphysical in art. His works often delve into the complexities of identity, spirituality, and community engagement, reflecting a deep commitment to both cultural preservation and innovation. Suklu’s notable exhibitions include “Panji, Between Body and Shadow” at the IMF international Art Event in Nusa Dua (2018), “Intermingle Art Project, Light Pattern” at Bentara Budaya Bali (2017), and “Wings and Time” at Komaneka Fine Art Gallery (2016).
I bought this painting from a neighbour who was relocating to another country. This painting depicts what appears to be a hunter, armed with arrows, caught in the midst of a powerful environmental encounter. This artist’s use of contrasting colours creates a sense of raw intensity, almost as if the scene is unfolding in real time. There’s something primal and honest in the composition that really struck me.
I haven’t met the artist personally, but I’d like to learn more about him.
