Ibrahim Sutan Parpatiah (Indonesian, b. 1975) is a contemporary abstract artist known for his expressive and intuitive approach to painting. He began his art education at a vocational arts college in West Sumatra before continuing his studies at the Institut Seni Indonesia in Yogyakarta, where he specialised in painting. After completing his formal training, he returned to West Sumatra, balancing teaching with the development of his professional artistic practice.
Rooted in abstract expressionism, Ibrahim’s work emphasises emotion, spontaneity, and the physical act of painting. His compositions are guided by colour, gesture, and layered surfaces, allowing each work to evolve organically without predetermined outcomes. Rather than offering fixed narratives, his paintings invite open interpretation, encouraging viewers to engage personally with the visual language. He continues to work actively within the Indonesian art scene while maintaining strong ties to Yogyakarta’s artistic community.
