My summer vacation almost always began in Paris before COVID, and it's nice to bring a touch of that Parisian vibe into my home

Jacques Bouyssou (French, 1926–1997) was a painter renowned for his expressive depictions of coastal towns and cityscapes. Born near Honfleur, France, he grew up in an artistic environment, frequently interacting with painters such as Othon Friesz (French, 1879–1949), Raoul Dufy (French, 1877–1953), and Jean Lagar (French, 1893–1960). Initially studying architecture at the School of Fine Arts of Troyes, he later pursued painting in Paris under the guidance of Lucien Simon (French, 1861–1945) at the Academy of the Grand Chaumière.
Bouyssou’s work is celebrated for its vibrant portrayal of coastal life, particularly in Normandy’s harbours, Parisian streets, and Mediterranean coastlines. Influenced by Albert Marquet and Maurice Utrillo, his style combines vivid colours and loose brushwork, capturing both the dynamic energy of urban scenes and the peaceful stillness of coastal landscapes. His love for plein air painting is evident in his ability to capture the changing light, from the soft hues of dawn to the warm glow of evening.
His use of bold colour contrasts and textured brushstrokes creates depth and atmosphere, transforming his depictions of harbours and cityscapes into emotional responses to his surroundings. Bouyssou’s treatment of the sea ranges from calm waters to crashing waves, focusing on the interplay between light, water, and sky. His work merges the traditions of French landscape painting with a modern sensibility, evoking a sense of nostalgia and capturing the essence of post-impressionist energy.
