José Lerma (Spanish, b.1971) is a multimedia contemporary artist born in Seville and based in Puerto Rico. His practice focuses primarily on portraiture, examining the relationship between social, material and institutional contexts. Drawing from his surroundings as well as art-historical references, Lerma uses painting to consider how images shape perceptions of identity, culture and social power. His recent portraits are characterised by heavily textured surfaces and expressive impasto, created through custom-mixed acrylic paint.

Lerma has held solo exhibitions at institutions and galleries including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and Almine Rech in Paris, London and Shanghai. His work is held in collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Saatchi Collection, Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Milwaukee Art Museum. He has also served as an Associate Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 2009.
