Joydip Sengupta (Indian, b. 1965) is an artist based in Kolkata, known for his meticulous, research-driven practice that blends drawing, photography, and installation. He often works with long-term projects that investigate memory, archives, displacement, and shifting landscapes. Across his series, Sengupta treats the act of documentation as both artistic method and subject, exploring how visual records shape personal and collective histories.
His works frequently merge field observation with imaginative reconstruction, creating images that sit between fact and speculation. Many of his drawings and mixed-media pieces re-map urban and rural spaces affected by change, while others reflect on intimate sites tied to his own past. The result is a practice that invites viewers to consider how memory is built, how it falters, and how art can restore or question what is lost.
Acquired from Arushi Arts in 2008.
