Justin Lee (Singaporean, b. 1963) is a visual artist and designer who has participated in numerous artist-in-residence programs in Japan. He was selected to train at the Tyler Print Institute in New York, and has participated in numerous exhibitions held in Singapore and internationally.
Justin's work reflects both contemporary design and traditional techniques, with a Singaporean feel. His works focus on the consumerist culture of the east, reflecting on words and images from the mass media like signage, billboards and consumer products which control our thoughts and expression.
When I first saw this work, it immediately made me laugh. How often can art do that? It is no mean feat to out-wit Warhol. The wood blocks are completely sealed in the airtight box which is great for maintenance but the entire piece is heavy. I began displaying it free-standing on the floor, which I thought resonated with the subject matter.
