Growing up alongside painting, Kim Kwan-Young (Korean, b. 1976) found solace in art during an unstable and unhappy childhood. His love for painting blossomed during his studies in fine art, where he was influenced by the works of American Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning.
He studied sculpture at Hongik University and proceeded to attend the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan to study painting. This cross-cultural educational experience enriched his artistic perspective and provided depth to his future creations. His artistic style is inspired by French Informal Activity and Expressionism.
Kim's works are characterised by layers of randomly stacked paint, often incorporating red hues and traditional auspicious elements. This abstract style serves as a medium for expressing the artist's emotions, evoking the passage of time and vanishing memories. Having observed loved ones lose their memories, Kim strives to materialise fragments of those memories through his art, preserving and conveying them in the process.
