Lim Kay Hiong (Singaporean, 1947-2025) was born in Shantou, China. He migrated to Singapore in 1953 at age six and developed an early passion for art. He trained in traditional Chinese ink painting under pioneers Fan Chang Tien and See Hiang To, and studied Western painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1966.
Active both as an artist and educator, Lim briefly taught ink painting at NAFA and held leadership roles in gatherings like the Hua Han Art Society, the Society of Chinese Artists, and the Federation of Art Societies (Singapore). In 1991, he became a full-time artist known for his skillful depictions of birds, flowers, cats and domestic animals, spanning styles from traditional representational to modern abstract.
His work earned recognition beyond Singapore, including a merit award at the 2005 international Chinese Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting & Seal-carving Exhibition in Beijing. Lim continued to exhibit regionally throughout Southeast Asia and globally, and passed away on 12 January 2025.
