This piece sits within Lin Hsin Hsin's body of fluorescent, psychedelic-toned oil paintings on paper, using strident, non-naturalistic colour rather than representational imagery. Here the palette leans into blue, softened at the corners by pink and purple, closer to the murk and glow of an undersea world than to any fixed shore, a more atmospheric take on the vivid colour work she became known for.

Lin Hsin Hsin 林欣欣 (Singaporean, b. 1952) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist renowned for her pioneering work across diverse media, including early innovations in digital art for visual and performing arts. With a foundation in mathematics and computer science, she is also an accomplished poet and composer, finding a shared abstractness in art, mathematics, and music.
Her artistic journey began in childhood but took shape after high school, when she delved into oil painting under the guidance of Nanyang-style pioneer Cheong Soo Pieng (Singaporean, 1917–1983). Inspired by European masters like Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró—who also explored the intersections of music and mathematics—Lin developed a unique approach to abstraction.
Lin’s paper-based work runs parallel to her exploration with technology, as she believes in the preserving paper art. She has not only learned printmaking from established masters from Japan, but has also handmade her own acid-free paper using natural resources such as papaya and umbrella plants. Lin’s creative process, particularly with her paper works, effortlessly bridges her digital mastery and scientific rigor with tangible sustainability.
