Loh Ek Sem (Malaysian, b. 1956) is a contemporary artist celebrated for his stylized portrayals of Malaysian village life. A graduate of the Kuala Lumpur College of Art, he gained prominence in the 1990s with exhibitions at Galeri Maybank and Art Salon Kuala Lumpur. His work has been showcased internationally, including a tenure with Singapore's Opera Gallery from 1995 to 2000.
Loh's distinctive aesthetic features figures with elongated limbs and exaggerated proportions, often set against serene kampung (village) backdrops. Utilizing mediums like acrylic on canvas and handmade paper casts, he captures the essence of rural Malaysian life. His compositions depict everyday scenes imbued with a sense of nostalgia and tranquility.
