Lucien Frits Ohl (1904–1976) was a prominent, self-taught Dutch-Indonesian painter. Born in Palembang, Sumatra, he spent a significant portion of his life living and working across Indonesia—including Jakarta and Yogyakarta—before relocating to The Hague in 1954

A recurring centerpiece in Ohl's oeuvre is the Flamboyant tree (also known as the Royal Poinciana or flame tree). He captured these trees across countless compositions, using intense, fiery reds and oranges to juxtapose against the muted, earthy tones of native Indonesian architecture and village paths.
