LY (Japanese, b.1981) is a Tokyo-based contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, drawing and mural art. Born in Tokyo, she developed an early interest in painting before encountering street art, murals and graffiti, which became significant influences on her work. Her practice centres on a recurring character named LUV, a benevolent creature that functions as an alter ego and visual record of her experiences.
LY’s works draw from everyday life, motherhood, Tokyo’s urban environment, skateboarding and popular culture, combining elements of street art with a neo-Pop and Superflat-inspired visual language. Her earlier works are characterised by a restrained palette of black, white and grey, while more recent works introduce brighter colours. Alongside her studio practice, she has created murals in Japan, France, Thailand, Malaysia and the United States, and has exhibited internationally
