Magdalena Laskowska (Polish, b. 1985) graduated with distinction in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 2011. She has also completed an illustration annex in the studio of Dr. Zygmunt Januszewski. Laskowska works primarily in painting, often with oil, alkyd or acrylic, and photography. Her main subject is landscapes, both serene, dreamlike spaces and everyday urban or park scenes inhabited by people, rendered in a poetic, slightly surreal tone.
In her paintings, she often combines a synthetic, geometric approach to composition, featuring large, simplified areas, with selectively refined detail to draw the viewer’s focus. The contrast creates a subtle realism that is both accessible and contemplative. Her work reflects an interest in the symbolic or metaphysical dimension of place, the “mystique of the everyday.” She captures familiar scenes with emotional resonance, using careful attention to light, colour and mood to evoke memories and suggestion rather than direct narrative.
We bought this piece in November of 2022 at the Singapore Affordable Art Fair. The colours, clean lines and poolside landscapes exuded a calm and serene feeling that we wanted to have in our home.
Her picturesque poolsides embody a sense of effortless California cool. Featuring beach balls, deck chairs, and cloudless blue skies, these minimalist paintings are meticulously staged, reminiscent of curated Instagram feeds. Yet these scenes are unpopulated, creating a sense of loneliness that hangs over their manicured glamour, reminiscent of works by David Hockney.
