Miertje Skidmore (Australian, b. 1957) is an abstract painter whose career spans more than four decades. She began as a landscape and underwater artist and gradually developed a distinctive abstract language built on movement, layered colour and expressive energy. Her paintings are known for their sweeping gestures and luminous surfaces. She often builds compositions through transparent and opaque layers that create depth and a sense of shifting light. Much of her work evokes natural forces and atmospheric motion, which gives her abstractions an elemental character. Skidmore has exhibited widely in Australia through solo and group exhibitions, and her work has been collected locally and internationally. Her recent shows have focused on themes of tranquility, regeneration and the emotional impact of colour. (Photographed in October 2025)
