Ken Mihara (Japanese, b. 1958) is a distinguished ceramic artist renowned for his unglazed stoneware sculptures that embody the serene landscapes of his native Izumo, Shimane Prefecture. Immersed in the region's natural beauty and Shinto heritage, Mihara's creations serve as profound reflections of his inner self and the environment that shapes his artistry.
Mihara apprenticed under Funaki Kenji (Japanese, b. 1927) from 1981 to 1982. Throughout his career, Mihara has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Grand Prize at the Chanoyu-no-Zokei Exhibition in 2001 and 2008. His works have been showcased in esteemed exhibitions worldwide. Mihara's sculptures are held in prominent public collections globally.
His innovative approach involves hand-forming pieces using iron-rich clay indigenous to Shimane, followed by multiple high-temperature firings. This meticulous process yields subtle hues ranging from deep grey to peach, misty white, and purple, achieved without the application of glazes. Mihara's forms often draw inspiration from ancient vessels and the art of origami, resulting in sculptures that harmoniously blend linear precision with gentle curves. His work continues to captivate audiences, offering a contemplative experience that bridges the timeless beauty of nature with contemporary ceramic artistry.
