Ming Wong (Singaporean, b. 1971) is a multimedia artist known for his explorations of identity, language, and cinematic history. Born in Singapore and later based in Berlin, Wong studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His practice often involves reinterpreting classic films, where he performs multiple roles, challenging notions of authenticity, cultural representation, and gender. Wong’s works frequently engage with cinema from different cultures, such as Life of Imitation (2009), which reimagines scenes from P. Ramlee’s Ibu Mertua Ku, or In Love for the Mood (2012), his tribute to Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love.
A celebrated figure in contemporary art, Wong has exhibited at major international venues, including the Venice Biennale (where he represented Singapore in 2009), Tate Modern, and the Guggenheim. His work continues to bridge performance, video, and installation, offering critical reflections on cinema, culture, and selfhood.
Acquired from the Substation from an exhibition in 1995.
