Nizar Sulaiman (Malaysian, b. unknown) is a contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, ready-made works and conceptual art. He graduated with a Degree in Fine Art from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in 2013, majoring in Painting with a minor in Liberal Studies. His work was influenced by artists and thinkers such as Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns and Martin Heidegger, shaping an approach that combines material experimentation with conceptual inquiry.
Working across abstraction and object-based practices, Nizar explores ideas surrounding perception, systems and contemporary society. Alongside exhibitions within the Malaysian art scene, he has also participated in community-based art initiatives and socially engaged projects, reflecting an interest in the relationship between art and public interaction. His works often balance spontaneity with layered conceptual references, resulting in compositions that are both visually direct and open to interpretation.
Nasionalism was a group exhibition held at Segaris Art Center in August 2023 in conjunction with Malaysia’s independence month. Featuring twelve Malaysian artists including Nizar Sulaiman, the exhibition explored different interpretations of nationalism through contemporary artistic practices, with works reflecting on identity, politics, symbolism, culture and the social realities of modern Malaysia.
Purchased from Segaris Art Center, Nasionalism, 12–30 August 2023.
