The piece was acquired from the artist when traveling to Yangon in Myanmar in 2004. It was a privilege to visit the studio shared by Nyein Chan Su and another artist Ming Zaw (see artwork here) at the end of my trip.
Born in 1973, Nyein Chan Su, known as NCS, is a Burmese painter with a traditional training in painting at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon. He showcases works inspired by Nat, a spirits or deities worshipped in central Burma alongside Buddhism. His participation in the 1999 Fukuoka Art Triennale in Japan launched his international art career.
NCS’ artworks are in the permanent collections of the Singapore Art Museum, the Fukuoka Art Museum as well as in private collections in Europe and Asia.
Sadly NCS passed away in 2020.
