Quek Kiat Sing (Singaporean, b. 1972) juxtaposes modern-day subjects with traditional Chinese Ink to emphasise the relevance of Asian culture in contemporary life. She received numerous awards and has a permanent site-specific commission Everyday Singapore 每日所见 at Shenton Way MRT Station featuring familiar scenes in the vicinity depicted in her signature contemporary ink style with a tinge of humour.
This work was created when the artist travelled to London in 2007. Her virtuosity in ink is evident in how she captures the features of the buildings, autumn trees and the street scene within such a small frame. She accents the famous dome of the painting’s subject matter with the colour of oxidised copper.
