R. B. Bhaskaran (Indian, b.1942) is one of India's leading contemporary painters and printmakers, closely associated with the Madras Art Movement of the 1960s. Born in Chennai, he studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, before undertaking further training in fresco painting, printmaking, ceramics, and lithography in India, Israel, and the United Kingdom. Rejecting the restrictive notion of a prescribed Indian artistic identity, Bhaskaran developed a highly personal visual language shaped by expressive line, bold colour, and an enduring spirit of experimentation.
Best known for his iconic series depicting cats and couples, Bhaskaran employs these recurring motifs as vehicles for exploring form, relationships, and the human condition rather than literal representation. Alongside his artistic practice, he has played a significant role as an educator and administrator, serving as Principal of the Government College of Arts, Chennai, and Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi. His works are held in major public collections in India and internationally, reflecting his lasting contribution to modern Indian art.
