Rahul Mukherjee (Indian, b. 1978) works primarily with painting, and his compositions frequently depict human figures alongside animals, hybrid forms, mirrors, and layered shadows. Across these works, he repeatedly uses the motif of the shadow to suggest multiple perspectives and hidden psychological or social realities, while mirrors function as devices of reflection and confrontation. His imagery often shifts between realism and surrealism, allowing symbolic and dreamlike elements to coexist with everyday human presence. Through this visual language, he constructs complex spatial scenes that invite viewers to examine power, identity, and perception.

Mukherjee’s artistic intent is rooted in exploring how individuals navigate political, social, and psychological pressures within contemporary society. His hybrid figures and symbolic props are not meant as literal narratives but as open-ended metaphors for fractured identity, moral conflict, and evolving human conditions. By combining familiar human forms with distorted or surreal elements, his works resist fixed interpretation and instead encourage viewers to reflect on ambiguity, contradiction, and the layered nature of reality.
