Robert Wyland (American, b. 1956) is a painter, muralist, and sculptor, best known for his monumental Whaling Walls, a series of over 100 large-scale public murals featuring life-sized whales and marine life. These murals are painted across cities worldwide, aiming to inspire ocean conservation through the power of visual storytelling. Wyland’s practice consists of his knowledge in Fine Arts and environmental advocacy, he often explores the same themes of ocean life through different mediums. His work, on display for millions of people to see, hopes to connect the oceans and its creatures to viewers emotionally, to generate a sense of responsibility for their protection.
In 1993, Wyland founded the Wyland Foundation, a dedication to promoting, protecting and preserving the world’s oceans, waterways, and marine life. The foundation’s initiatives include youth art contests, environmental education campaigns, and partnerships with global organisations to raise awareness about the critical state of our oceans.
