S. H. Raza (Indian, 1922–2016) was one of the most influential figures in modern Indian art and a founding member of the influential Progressive Artists’ Group in Bombay. Trained in India before moving to France in 1950, he developed a distinctive visual language that evolved from expressive landscapes into powerful geometric abstractions. His works are celebrated for their rich colour, spiritual symbolism, and synthesis of modernist abstraction with Indian philosophy and cultural traditions.
From the 1980s onwards, Raza became internationally renowned for his iconic Bindu motif, a symbolic dot representing the source of creation, energy, and existence. Drawing inspiration from Indian cosmology, spirituality, and sacred geometry, he created vibrant compositions that explored themes of space, time, nature, and consciousness. Widely exhibited and collected worldwide, Raza is regarded as a pioneering force in modern Indian art, whose work bridged Eastern philosophical thought and international abstraction.
