Sally Morgan (Australian, b. 1951) belongs to the Palyku (Palku) and Nyamal peoples of the Pilbara region. Raised by her mother and grandmother in Perth, Morgan grew up believing she was of Indian descent until she discovered at age 15 that she was Aboriginal. It was a revelation that inspired her groundbreaking autobiography My Place (1987), which has since sold over half a million copies in Australia and been translated worldwide.

Morgan began exhibiting her art at Birukmarri Gallery in Fremantle in 1986, shortly before her literary debut. She is celebrated for vibrant screen-printed works like Citizenship (1987) and Under Fire (1989), which explore themes of identity, colonial history and women’s experiences. Her artworks are held in major Australian collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Australia. Beyond visual art, Morgan has authored children’s books and drama, and serves as Director of the Centre for Indigenous History and Arts at the University of Western Australia.
