Sami Briss (Romanian, b. 1930) creates introspective and timeless works that reflect a dreamy, symbolic world. Despite leaving his native Romania for Israel in 1967, Briss’s art remains deeply inspired by childhood memories of Romanian folklore and icon paintings.
Over time, his symbolic imagery has evolved to incorporate influences from his life in Israel, personal experiences, and dreams. Since the 1960s, he has favored small formats, constructing compositions from harmonious, stylized figures with rounded forms and flowing outlines. The luminous golden backgrounds imbue his colors with a rich glow, enhancing the poetic and evocative nature of his work.
Briss’s art defies trends, offering a highly personal and powerfully lyrical expression.
