Sarah Choo Jing (Singaporean, b. 1990) is a multidisciplinary fine artist working with photography, video and installation. Choo has had numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, and was featured at the 57th Venice Biennale. Her works frequently capture solitary moments of modern life, delving into themes of the flâneur’s perspective, voyeurism, and the uncanny.

This work is a one-of-a-kind special commission created for Art Outreach’s fundraising auction in 2014 where artists were challenged to create art interventions on items donated by luxury brands. 

Tasked with a pair of delicate Liuli crystal martini glasses, Choo found inspiration in Susan Sontag – “Existence is no more than the precarious attainment of relevance in an intensely mobile flux of past, present, and future.” Reflecting upon transition as a perpetual state of being, the artist relates this moment in time to the experience of being on an escalator; where one is traversing between ports. Through documenting multiple ‘moments in time’, Choo captures various individuals in a state of flux. These images are then presented as a composite of layered acrylic engravings taking the form of an iceberg within the martini glass.
