Shannon Bono (British, b. 1995) is a visual artist of Sierra Leonean and Congolese heritage whose evocative, layered paintings centre Black womanhood through an afro-feminist lens, combining African textile motifs, Christian iconography, Renaissance aesthetics and scientific imagery to create richly symbolic, figurative compositions. She earned a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Essex in 2016, an MA in Art & Science from Central Saint Martins in 2019, an Associate Fellowship at the University of the Arts London in 2021, and completed her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2024 under the Sir Frank Bowling Scholarship. Her solo debut, The Hands That Hold You, was held at Anderson Contemporary in London in 2021, and her work was featured in prestigious exhibitions including Bold Black British at Christie’s, Reclaiming Magic at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and the group show Windrush: Portraits of a Pioneering Generation, with her commission appearing at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh in 2023, and the National Portrait Gallery— and entering the Royal collection.

The process of creating A Reflection of You saw Bono collaborate closely with a print studio in London to reimagine a pre-existing painting, layering the original green palette with luxurious gold tones. Furthermore, the work’s surface is hand-finished by the artist with a series of details in 3D pearlescent cream— making every print unique.
