Shingo Takeuchi (Japanese, b. 1976) was born into a family of potters in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s oldest and most revered ceramic regions. After graduating from Kyoto Seika University, where he studied ceramics, Takeuchi returned to his hometown to continue his practice, deeply rooted in the traditions of Shigaraki-yaki. Today, he is regarded as one of the leading voices of the new generation of Shigaraki potters, balancing heritage with a contemporary sensibility.

Takeuchi’s works are known for their earthy, raw surfaces, which reflect both the natural materials of the Shigaraki landscape and the unpredictability of the anagama kiln. He often favours minimal intervention, allowing fire, ash, and clay to dictate the final result.  Takeuchi finds beauty in simplicity and imperfection, creating vessels and sculptural works that feel as though they have emerged directly from the earth itself. His practice honours the quiet power of materiality, where process and time become as important as the finished object.
