Simphiwe Ndzube (South African, b.1990) is a contemporary artist born in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, collage, sculpture, performance and sound. He graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 2015. Drawing on South Africa’s history and his experiences growing up in the post-apartheid era, Ndzube creates imaginative worlds populated by fantastical figures and surreal landscapes, blending elements of mythology, realism and storytelling.
Ndzube’s works explore themes of freedom, identity, power and the complexities of the Black experience in contemporary South Africa. Through layered materials, vibrant colours and unconventional figures, he combines historical references with fictional narratives, reimagining familiar social realities in dreamlike settings. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Denver Art Museum, Museo Kaluz in Mexico City and the Lyon Biennale, and is held in collections such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa and the Rubell Museum.
