Sompop Budtarad (Thai, b. 1957) is a contemporary painter, best known for his portrayal of rural Thai life and spiritual themes. In 1980, he received his B.F.A. from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University. From 1986 to 1992, Budtarad contributed to the mural painting project at the Buddhapadipa Temple in London, collaborating with Thai artists Chalermchai Kositpipat and Panya Wijinthanasarn.
Budtarad’s work consists of both Thai culture and Buddhism, with themes of spiritual realization and respect for nature. His art frequently addresses themes like the impermanence of life, the preservation of tradition and humanity’s relationship with nature. In his exhibition “Born from the Earth,” Budtarad painted portraits of various individuals, including the King and a humble farmer, using the soil-based paint. By using earth as a medium, he removes social hierarchy from his portraits, portraying all figures with the same humble material, whether farmers, monks, or officials.
His works have been in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Thailand, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Bangkok, where his pieces are part of the permanent collection.
