Suwaji (Indonesian, b. 1942) is a modern and contemporary painter whose career is closely tied to the development of Indonesian fine art after independence. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta from 1958 and later became a lecturer there, shaping younger generations of artists. His works often merge decorative abstraction with strong cultural references, drawing on traditional Javanese motifs, mythology, and religious symbolism. Known for his expressive use of colour and dynamic compositions, Suwaji has exhibited widely in Indonesia and abroad, with his paintings regularly appearing at Southeast Asian auctions, where they continue to attract collectors for their distinctive blend of modernity and tradition.
