Takashi Murakami (Japanese, b. 1962) is a contemporary artist renowned for his "Superflat" theory, which combines traditional Japanese painting techniques with the aesthetics of manga, anime and pop culture. Trained in Nihonga (Japanese painting) at Tokyo University of the Arts, he later developed a distinctive style that crosses between fine art and commercial design, incorporating recurring motifs such as smiling flowers, skulls and the character Mr. DOB. Murakami has exhibited globally, founded the art production company Kaikai Kiki, and collaborated with major cultural figures and brands including Louis Vuitton, Pharrell Williams and Kanye West.

Murakami’s “Black Lives Matter” print combines vibrant colours and playful motifs with a powerful message, highlighting racial justice and equality through this signature superflat style.

Spray paint finishing makes each piece unique and was completed by Murakami himself.

    Acquired from NTWRK in 2020.
