Tay Bak Chiang (Malaysian, b. 1973) is a contemporary artist who draws inspiration from the natural environment of Singapore and Southeast Asia. He interprets anew themes of nature such as stones, lotus ponds, birds and flowers.

Belonging to an emerging generation of young Singapore ink artists who has developed a distinctive language in ink painting, Tay executes the work with daring brushwork, unusual colours and a striking composition; simple geometric shapes represent lotus leaves and stems.

Tay graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1995 and furthered his studies at the China Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou, China from 1997 to 1998. His accolades include the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award (Chinese Painting) from the Singapore Art Society (1999 and 2002), First Prize (Traditional Chinese Medium) in the 19th and 22nd UOB Painting of the Year competitions (2000 and 2003), and the National Arts Council’s Young Artist Award (2002).
