Teiji Hayama (Japanese, b. 1975) studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, graduating in 1998. After a brief career in fashion, including work with Issey Miyake in Tokyo, he shifted fully to fine art. He now lives and works in Switzerland and exhibits internationally, with solo and group shows across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Hayama is particularly known for his series of portraits of young girls, in which he explores vulnerability, presence, and the tension between innocence and awareness. These works feature subjects with haunting expressions and carefully manipulated proportions, often isolating them against minimal or abstracted backgrounds. By focusing on these figures, Hayama examines the psychology of identity and the gaze, inviting viewers to consider the emotional complexity behind seemingly simple faces. His technique blends realism with subtle distortion, creating images that feel both intimate and uncanny.
