Tran Trung Tin (Vietnamese, 1933–2008) was a self-taught artist known for his raw, expressive paintings that emerged from the social and emotional climate of wartime Vietnam. Beginning to paint in the late 1960s, he developed an intuitive style marked by loose brushwork, flattened figures, and bold yet often muted colors. Due to limited materials during the war, Tin frequently painted with oil on newspaper, turning everyday surfaces into intimate visual diaries. His works often feature solitary figures, especially women and mothers, that were rendered with a direct, almost childlike simplicity that conveyed vulnerability and quiet tenderness.

Working largely outside official artistic circles, Tin created a deeply personal body of work that contrasted with the more formal styles dominant in Vietnam at the time. Today he is regarded as a distinctive voice in modern Vietnamese art, admired for the emotional honesty and immediacy of his paintings. His works are held in major collections, including the National Gallery Singapore, and continue to influence conversations about independent artistic expression in Vietnam during the war and postwar periods.
