Huang Bao Fang 黄葆芳 (Chinese, 1912-1989) received his formal art training at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts under the renowned Chinese painter Liu Haisu, later furthering his studies with the celebrated master Wu Changshuo. In 1938, he relocated from Shanghai to Singapore, where he would go on to play a formative role in the development of the local art scene.

Beyond his own practice, Huang contributed to Singapore's cultural landscape through teaching ink painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and serving as Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Singapore Chinese Art Research Association in the 1950s. As a Chinese ink painter, he was known for blending local subject matter with the conventions of traditional Chinese ink painting. In 1980, he was appointed President of Singapore's Society of Chinese Artists and became the first Singaporean artist to be invited by China to hold a solo exhibition, which took place at the National Art Museum of Beijing.
