Veera Santhanam (Indian, 1946-2017) received his Diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Chennai. He worked early in his career as a designer at the Weavers Service Centre before dedicating himself fully to painting. Santhanam’s work was inspired by traditional South Indian folk crafts, especially leather puppetry and temple murals, and he exhibited widely in important group shows and several solo exhibitions.
Santhanam’s paintings often reflected his deep engagement with local visual traditions and everyday life, drawing on motifs and narrative forms rooted in his heritage. He won several national awards for his art and became known for blending folk sensibilities with contemporary practice. Beyond painting, he was also active in social causes and appeared in films, bringing his voice and presence into multiple cultural spaces before his death in 2017.
