Wang Quingsong (Chinese, b 1966) is a photographer based in Beijing, China. He was trained as a painter at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1993, before moving towards photography. His works are often large-scale, staged photographs that critique China’s rapid modernisation, consumerism, and political dynamics through the 1990s and 2000s. His works often involve elaborate setups with numerous models, sometimes as many as 300, and include elements of traditional Chinese scroll painting with Western art influences and propaganda imagery.
Wang’s notable works include Skyscraper (2008), The Bloodstained Shirt (2018), and On the Field of Hope (2020). His art has been widely exhibited internationally, with shows at venues such as the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Shanghai Art Museum.
