Wei Dong (Chinese, b. 1968) is a leading contemporary Chinese painter known for his distinctive figurative works that blend traditional Chinese aesthetics with Western art historical influences. He graduated from Capital Normal University in Beijing in 1991 and later moved to the United States, where his exposure to different cultural contexts further shaped his artistic direction.
Wei’s paintings often juxtapose classical Chinese landscape elements with stylised, androgynous figures and themes of desire, identity and social tension. His work draws from a wide range of references, including traditional ink painting, Social Realism and European art history, creating compositions that are both visually striking and conceptually layered. Through this hybrid approach, he explores the complexities of modern life, cultural shifts and the suppression of personal expression.
