Wong Keen (Singaporean, b.1942) is one of Singapore’s most celebrated painters, recognised for his distinctive fusion of Chinese ink traditions and American Abstract Expressionism. Trained under pioneer artists Liu Kang and Chen Wen Hsi before studying in New York, he developed a highly individual visual language that combines gestural brushwork, bold colour, and expressive forms. Working across oil, acrylic, ink, collage, and mixed media, his practice spans both abstraction and figuration while maintaining a strong emphasis on experimentation and reinvention.

Having spent more than five decades between Singapore and the United States, Wong absorbed the energy of the post-war New York art scene while retaining a deep connection to Chinese aesthetics and calligraphic traditions. Throughout his long career, he has returned repeatedly to recurring subjects such as the lotus, the nude, and the natural world, transforming them through a dynamic interplay of form, colour, and movement. Widely regarded as a pioneering figure in Singaporean contemporary art, Wong continues to be celebrated for a body of work that defies easy categorisation.

This work was featured on the cover of Second Nature: Paintings by Wong Keen, Singapore: Wong Keen & artcommune gallery, 2014.
