Xia Yu (Chinese, b. 1981) is a contemporary Chinese painter known for his sensitive depictions of everyday life. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and is currently based in Beijing. His practice centres on tempera painting, a medium that allows him to build soft, layered surfaces and a muted, luminous quality.
Xia’s works often draw from ordinary scenes and personal memory, including family moments, still life and quiet corners of daily life. Through a restrained palette and carefully constructed compositions, he creates paintings that feel reflective and familiar. His approach combines influences from art history with contemporary sensibilities, resulting in works that emphasise atmosphere, emotion and the passage of time rather than overt narrative.
