Yin Kun’s (b. 1969, Sichuan China) artworks provide political statements in a comical yet thought-provoking way on the societal and cultural facets of life in China. This is a part of the popular Baby Face series.
This was displayed in Wellington Art Gallery in Hong Kong just as modern Chinese artists starting selling works abroad. The vibrant blues frame, the equally bold red and white (of the China flag) attracting the eye. In addition, the comical air of the babies’ dressed in contrasting office attire drew me to the piece as being a striking political statement. As one draws away from the painting you can make out the shape of a human brain, symbolising a light-hearted take on a brainwashed office population.
The work really needs a big wall to get the full visual - it was best displayed when I had a gallery staircase, it made for a really striking entry piece.
