Yue Minjun (Chinese, b. 1962) is a leading contemporary Chinese artist best known for his iconic paintings of laughing self-portraits. He studied oil painting at Hebei Normal University and later developed his distinctive style in Beijing during the early 1990s, a period of rapid change in China’s art scene. His works span painting, sculpture and printmaking, all centred around his signature exaggerated laughing figure.
Yue’s art is often associated with Cynical Realism, reflecting themes of identity, social tension and the complexities of modern Chinese society. His repeated self-image, frozen in laughter, conveys both humour and unease, creating a contrast between outward expression and inner meaning. He gained international recognition in the 2000s, particularly after his painting Execution achieved a record auction price, and his works are now held in major collections worldwide.
