Yusuke Hanai (Japanese, b.1978) is a contemporary artist and illustrator renowned for his distinctive graphic style, which blends Japanese aesthetics with the visual language of American surf culture, underground comics, and mid-century illustration. After studying illustration in San Francisco in 2003, he returned to Japan and developed a practice characterised by expressive linework, muted colour palettes, and whimsical characters that balance humour with reflections on everyday life, human relationships, and the natural world.
Drawing inspiration from surfing, popular culture, and personal experience, Hanai's works explore themes of resilience, community, and the relationship between people and nature. Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and illustration, he has collaborated with brands including Vans, Uniqlo, Levi's, and Sacai while exhibiting internationally in Japan, the United States, Europe, and Australia. His work is recognised for its ability to combine playful imagery with thoughtful observations on contemporary life.
